Students are encouraged to be autonomous in the library. All PYP students, grade 2 to 5, have been taught to use a ruler to keep a book’s “address” when browsing. This allows students to be autonomous and to be aware of spine label and call numbers (this is the actual book’s address) and how these items are important in organizing a library.

As students browse titles on book spines and they find a book interest, they insert the ruler where the book is located, remove the book to look at it and return the book where the ruler is inserted. This way, the books stay in order and all books on similar subjects stay together!
Recap:
1- Insert ruler
2- Look at the book
3- If the book is of no interest, return book to its location on the shelf where the ruler was put in place
4- Remove ruler
If you like the book you were browsing, simply remove the ruler and head to the counter to check out your book!
